Mount Elgon National Park

Mount Elgon near Mbale on the eastern border with Uganda at 4,321 m is the 4th highest mountain in East Africa. Although the mountain straddles the Kenya border, its loftiest peak, Wagagai, lies within Uganda.

The park is well known for its magnificent waterfalls, hot springs, gorges, caves and a check list of  300 birds. The full trekking circuit usually takes 4-5 days to complete. No technical climbing equipment is required as all major peaks are accessible to hikers.

Access: Mbale lies 3 – 4 hours from Kampala along good tar roads.  From Mbale one can go through Budadiri or continue to Sipi.

Where to Stay: There are some up market, mid range and budget lodging facilities including Sipi River Lodge, Lacam Lodge, and Mbale Resort Hotel with simple accommodation at the Forest Exploration Centre in Kapkwai.
